Although George
Rhoads is best known for his large audio-kinetic sculptures in public
places, he has been painting all his life.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Rhoads studied drawing and painting at the
Art Institute of Chicago, attended the University of Wisconsin, and
graduated from the University of Chicago. Rhoads lived in New York City
from 1947 to 1969 and his paintings were sold through the Terry Dintenfass
Gallery in New York City. In 1963 he was nominated for the Prix de Rome.
It was during this period that he began to make copper kinetic fountains
and rolling ball sculptures.
Rhoads moved to the Finger Lakes region in 1970 and has been here since.
